Frequency Specific Microcurrent Research

Early research on the effects of Microcurrent revealed it created a 500% increase in ATP production. ATP (Adenosine 5’ – triphosphate) is the chemical energy source that allows cells to perform their functions. Microcurrent also caused an increase in protein synthesis by 70% and amino acid transport into the cell by 40%. [1] Increasing amino acid transport into the cells, increasing the cells ability to take those amino acids and turn them into proteins, and increasing the energy the cells have to function allows Microcurrent to accelerate the healing process.

     A study of Frequency Specific Microcurrent using a specific frequency combination was able to reduce LOX induced inflammation 62% in 4 minutes in a mouse’s ear. [2]   LOX (lipoxygenase) is an oxidative enzyme that through the 5–lipoxygenase pathway is the source of potent pro-inflammatory mediators. LOX initiates a series of chemical reactions leading to the formation of proinflammatory compounds associated with diseases such as inflammation, fever, arthritis, and atherosclerosis.

     A research paper published in 2005 demonstrated the effect of Frequency Specific Microcurrent on circulating cytokine levels.[3] Cytokines are a group of proteins that are released by cells and are used as signaling compounds. Much like hormones and neurotransmitters, their production triggers a response in another cell or tissue. Certain types of cytokines trigger an inflammatory response.    In this study, blood was drawn from the test subjects to acquire a base line. After 90 minutes of treatment, blood was drawn at intervals over the next 1 hour and 45 minutes to measure the effects of the frequencies. The result was cytokine IL-1 was reduced from 330 to 80. IL-1 (interleukin-1) is a proinflammatory that can induce fever.   TNF-alpha was reduced from 305 to 78. Tissue Necrosis Factor-alpha is a cytokine that stimulates acute phase reaction leading to systemic inflammation. Overproduction of TNF-alpha has been implicated in rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, asthma, and insulin resistance.   IL-6 was reduced from 239 to 76. IL-6 (interleukin-6) is a proinflammatory cytokine. It is released by macrophages and T cells in response to trauma or tissue damage leading to inflammation.      Substance P was reduced from 180 to 54 after 90 minutes of treatment. Substance P is a neurotransmitter that promotes transmission of pain impulses from peripheral pain receptors to the central nervous system. This action facilitates pain perception. Increased Substance P has an association with central pain syndromes such as fibromyalgia.

     The above study also revealed an increase in Beta Endorphin levels from 5.2 to 88.3 after 90 minutes of treatment.3   Beta Endorphin is an opioid neurotransmitter found in nerve cells that is used as an analgesic in the body to numb or dull pain. It can also boost the immune system and kill cancer cells.

     A study of 54 patients measured Frequency Specific Microcurrent treatment’s effect on fibromyalgia pain.  In this patient population, all participants met the ACR criteria for fibromyalgia.  The mean age was 44 years old.  The average chronicity was 9.5 years.  The treatment protocol was run for 90 minutes.  All participants experienced relief.  This reduction in pain lasted between one hour and two weeks.  Average pain measured on a Visual Analog Scale was 7.3 on a scale of 10 (10 being the worst pain) prior to treatment and 1.3 out of 10 after treatment[4] .

     A study of 23 patients measured Frequency Specific Microcurrent treatment’s effect on lumbar (low back) myofascial pain.  In this patient population, 87% of the participants had failed with other treatments.  The average chronicity was 8.4 years.  The treatment duration averaged 5.7 treatments over the course of 5.7 weeks.  Average pain measured on a Visual Analog Scale was 6.8 on a scale of 10 (10 being the worst pain) prior to treatment and 1.6 out of 10 at the end of treatment.[5]

     A University of Washington clinical study demonstrated histological changes in tissues produced by Frequency Specific Microcurrent.  Over 20 days of use, 39% increased in blood circulation, 14% increased in collagen present, and 48% increased elastin present was measured. [6]
